Workshops and Tuition

Lime Photo 2012 Workshop Series

Starting in February 2012 is a series of intensive half-day and full day workshops with Emil von Maltitz. The size of the group is limited to 5 photographers (absolute maximum) so that each photographer is able to receive a large degree of attention and help during the workshop shoot. Each workshape consists of a shoot followed by a post-production session in the Limephoto studio. At the end of the workshop each student will be able to print out their favourite photograph of the day on an archival quality A3+ print. Each workshop costs R1000 per person (not including meals, transport or entrance fees) which includes hands-on tuition, cost of models (for shoots where models are required) and the final take-home print. As a special, a student can book and pay in advance for any three workshops for R2500 (a saving of R500).

  • February 4th 2012: Workshop 1 - Shongweni and working with water. Photographers will either travel together or meet at Shongweni Dam to spend a morning learning about and photographing water at the dam wall itself. Shongweni Dam offers interesting architectural features that mix with the moving water elements. On return to the studio students will work through images and learn some of the techniques in processing water images before printing out there favourite image.

  • March 3rd 2012 -Workshop 2 - Flower Photography: Meeting at one of the nurseries in Durban city, photographers will work through various techniques for photographing flowers, including artificial lighting using strobes, using reflectors and diffusers, and macro photograpy techniques for flower photography. On return to the studio students will work through images and learn some of the techniques in processing macro flower images before printing out their favourite image.

  • March 31st 2012 - Workshop 3 - Outdoor Portraiture with Flash: One of the hardest techniques to learn for enthusiast photographers is that of outdoor flash. With the help of two models, photographers will learn about mixing ambient and artificial light, how to use a flashmeter effectively and how to position and modify strobes for creative and effective lighting. The workshop will take place either on the beach or the Botanical Gardens (both venues often used by wedding photographers as this is a technique that lends itself to this type of photography). On return to the studio students will work through images and learn some of the techniques in processing postrait image before printing out their favourite image.

  • May 26th 2012 - Workshop 4 - High Speed Water Photography: A favourite technique among many photographers is that of creating frozen droplets of water suspended in air. This half-day workshop takes place entirely in the studio where students will learn how to create a basic setup for photographing water droplets. Photoshop techniques to enhance their images will be employed before each student can print out their favourite image.

  • June 23rd 2012 - Workshop 5 - Early Morning Panoramics: Utilizing the later start that winter affords, students will meet before dawn at a location on the beach in Durban. The camera technique of stitching images together to form panoramics will be explored from concept through to final post-production (to take place in te studio after the shoot). As with all the other workshops the final result will be an image printed with an height of 32cm (panoramics can be printed longer than A3+ usually allows when printed on a roll rather than a sheet).

Thanda Wildlife Photographic Workshop (with African Impact)

In collaboration with African Impact (a volunteer arm of African Encounter), the popular workshops that I have been leading in St Lucia have been moved as of January 2011 to Thanda Private Game Reserve. Situated north of Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park in Zululand in the north of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa the workshop courses consist of three to four days (depending on numbers) of intensive photography theory and practice, during which a number of game drives and classroom courses are conducted. For full details on the Thanda workshop follow the Link.

Based at the Intabane Lodge on Thanda's property, photographers will spend an intensive week learning about wildlife photography while putting theory into practice on numerous game drives (beginning Monday or Tuesday depending on group size). Please contact me for more details, or alternatively take a look at the blog where each month there is a write-up on the most recent workshop.

Private Tuition

I am availabe in Durban on a limited basis for private tuition in photography and photoshop.

Many beginner and amateur photographers find it intimidating to attend a workshop or classroom based course. Some simply do not learn in this atmosphere. For this reason I offer private tuition in the comfort of the student's home or office in front of their own computer. This is important in learning on one's own equipment as well as in setting up software so that it runs optimally.
